I am currently an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education in the Elementary and Early Childhood Education department at Queens College in the City University of New York (CUNY). My expertise is in combining classroom experience, interdisciplinary lenses from the fields of mathematics education and international education, and mixed research methods to improve schools and learning experiences, with a focus on enhancing educational outcomes for all learners.

I’m proud to be a faculty member at CUNY, the largest urban university system in the US founded in 1847 as the nation’s first free public institution of higher education, which is home to Queens College – the college that graduates the most teachers, counselors, and principals in the NY metropolitan area. I take very seriously my job of teaching – as well as learning with and from – those who want to become future elementary school teachers.

As a former two-time Peace Corps Volunteer and educator in Bangladesh and South Africa, math teacher in the NYC Department of Education, and math/interdisciplinary studies professor at Guttman Community College before becoming a math education professor at Queens College, I have dedicated my career to improving education, particularly for marginalized students and communities. My past scholarship traverses various fields in education ranging from international education, to postsecondary success, to the scholarship of teaching and learning STEM content. My current research is on cross-cultural comparisons of culturally responsive mathematics education and applying computational thinking to elementary mathematics education through applying methods from the learning sciences and design based education research.
